We have been busy over at Black Earth Products, with the spring gardening rush and a heap of bulk orders going out all over the country and even overseas. Biochar is finally starting to become a hot topic, which is about time.

If you are looking for a premium quality Biochar Black Earth Products can supply it in it’s popular 4kg tub, 200 litre drum or 1000 and 1400 litre bulk bags. We process a locally sourced sustainable waste product from the poultry industry which is plantation grown sawdust and poultry manure.

Black Earth Products Biochar hand applied over a two hectare section a far North Queensland pawpaw plantation before it was lightly incorporated into the soil. Application rate of 10 ton per hectare of the growing mounds. The grower noted “it was good product to work with as there was no dust and nothing blew away in the wind that constantly blows in the area.”

Interest is rising in the biochar community to further explore the dynamic relationship between the known properties of biochar and the organic materials long used to build soil carbon and productivity.

The Australian and New Zealand Biochar Researchers Network (ANZBRN) will be holding a Victorian Regional Meeting in Melbourne on the 29th-30th September 2011. The meeting is being hosted by Melbourne University and will be held at the Parkville campus. Keep an eye on ANZBRN website for more details.

Barry Batchelor, Director of BlackEarth Products will talk on the topic of Biochar production and use in his Permaculture garden. Wednesday 10th August at 630pm, Centreplace, Lawrence Street, Gympie.

School of Earth and Environment Researcher Noraini MD Jaafar says the study aims to determine the role of biochar in soil as a habitat for soil organisms and the effect of biochar on growth and functioning of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and other microbial activities.
