Biochar maker close up

July 1st, 2010 at 11:06

While progress on my latest revision of my Biochar making system has been slow, as I have had to scrap two sets of plans due to design issues, thanks to a good chat over a bottle of red with Russell Burnett from Biochar Energy Systems I didn’t start making my latest design as I would have had some major problems with the collection of condensed liquids, so it’s back to the drawing board. Below was a close up photo I took from a test fire I did, she’s a scary monster once the reaction happens. I clocked 600 deg C at one point. This system does not collect liquids at all but soot after 4 test fires did become a bit of a issue with the syngas jets.

Very interested in making biochar with inedible waste from our huge macadamia nut tree! Such a waste not to be able to use it back in the garden… I’ve downloaded the Everythingnice stove instructions but would appreciate any comments you might have about making a biochar in the backyard.

    Thanks

I’m meeting Russell Burnett in Victoria next week so I’ll have a chat to him and we can try and throw some simple ideas around for backyard systems, small scale up draft gasifier’s would be my first suggestion for a simple backyard Biochar system. Google “up draft gasifier” for lots of ideas.
